Paul Mutegi, 34

Head of Tax and Legal

Betika

The biggest bet Paul ever placed on himself was joining Betika, a sports betting platform with operations in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, DRC, Ghana, Nigeria, Mozambique, Zambia, and Malawi. Did he hit the jackpot?

“I don’t think I have made it. In this life, every mountain’s peak is another valley. There are always more peaks to conquer, more shores to sail,” the Head of Tax and Legat at Betika says.

Paul is a specialised tax accountant and an advocate of the High Court with over 11 years of experience in East Africa.

He is at home handling complex mergers and acquisitions, a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accounts of Kenya (ICPAK) and the Law Society of Kenya, and juggling the complex matters of law and tax.

"I don’t think I have made it. In this life, every mountain’s peak is another valley. There are always more peaks to conquer, more shores to sail."

Paul is now holding the door open for other younger lawyers, he having been ushered in at the table by Jemimah Mugo and Geoffrey Karu and his previous employers, Atiq Anjarwalla and Karim Anjarwalla of Anjarwalla & Khanna Advocates.

Emotional intelligence, he says, is the Midas touch that makes his work golden.

As Head of Legal at Betika, he is learning that he has to be accommodative, to absorb more.

Cowardice, he says, is how he defines failure.

“I am very courageous. I speak up. I read the room but I ensure that my interests and the interests of my stakeholders are met.”
