Ngari Mwaura, 32

Founder & CEO

Denri Africa

Ten years, thousands of bags, and dozens of youth employed later, Denri Africa has grown from a campus side-hustle into a regional fashion statement. It is rare to find a young leader who can build a manufacturing brand from nothing and scale it across the continent, but Ngari Mwaura, has done just that at 32.

He started Denri in 2015 during his first year of university after noticing that students got laptops without bags. What began as selling simple sleeves to friends has become one of the region’s most visible fashion brands, stocked in 16 stores across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, and supported by a workforce of more than 300.

His path has two defining moments, including the realisation that innovation often lies in everyday gaps. Denri was born from one such gap. The second was his discovery that a company is as strong as its people. This shifted his focus from production to culture-building.

At Denri, employees begin their journey with books on change management and attitude such as Who Moved my Cheese and Out of the Maze, followed by a month-long induction, boot camps, and ongoing leadership training. Ngari believes empowered people create exceptional products.

"Ngari believes empowered people create exceptional products."

His story echoes the Kenya of the future, one where youth spot problems around them and build solutions instead of waiting for perfect capital or perfect timing. His message is clear: start with what you have and remain disciplined and consistent.

He is driven by two missions of creating meaningful employment and designing products that solve real, local needs. Denri’s 140 bag designs spanning travel, work, gym and lifestyle have become everyday essentials for thousands of Kenyans. Each bag represents not just craftsmanship, but the livelihoods of families.
