Isaac Muuo, 33

Founder and CEO

Skate Empire LTD

Isaac Muuo is many things, depending on who is asking. He is an entrepreneur, a sports enthusiast and cares for others, especially the marginalised.

Over the years, Isaac has been reinventing himself. Although he holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi, he chose not to pursue a traditional legal career and instead followed his passion for sports.

Today, at Skate Empire in Thika, he is coaching 21 children with hidden talents in skating and chess. His dedication to mentoring the young kids sets him apart. Isaac believes that imparting knowledge to the younger generation gives him a sense of purpose.

“I started Skate Empire, a company that teaches children as young as three how to skate safely. We work with schools and institutions, and today I have a team of 25 coaches. As well as skating, we’ve expanded into chess and now have a competitive team leading the national league.

"Resilience comes from prayer, mentorship and continuous learning. I seek guidance from mentors when I face challenges and believe that setbacks are opportunities for growth."

Inspired by his father, who was a coach in the village, and Caroline Gaddu, who shaped his business approach to be people-centred, it was an obvious choice for him to dedicate his life to sports.

“A highlight has been seeing our chess and skating teams flourish, with some players competing nationally and internationally. For example, one of my students, Shone, recently won the Southlands tournament in Nairobi, a testament to the transformative power of mentorship”.

For the past 10 years, he has lived with the mantra that “true fulfilment comes from supporting and mentoring people. Whether you’re an entrepreneur or a sports enthusiast, find ways to consistently lift others up”.

Despite financial setbacks, Isaac aims to establish a grassroots talent development centre where children can access training regardless of their financial status, with a vision to train 1,000 athletes annually.

How do you stay resilient? “Resilience comes from prayer, mentorship and continuous learning. I seek guidance from mentors when I face challenges and believe that setbacks are opportunities for growth. Journaling and regular exercise also keep me grounded and focused.”

Looking back, he says his only regret is not getting started earlier. Globally, he is inspired by innovators such as Elon Musk who challenge norms to create change.

Isaac says he has chosen to open doors and opportunities for young children and leading them into a world of endless possibilities.
