For someone who once began their career troubleshooting networks and fixing IT glitches, reaching the apex of Kenya’s information security landscape was far from a guaranteed path.
But now Duncan has cemented his place in cybersecurity, serving as the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Access Bank Kenya.
“I’ve been in this industry for 11 years now. From IT support to securing banking systems, the journey has been about finding gaps, solving problems, and pushing boundaries,” he says.
He studied Communications and Information Engineering but noticed a niche in information security.
"The future belongs to those who adapt."
“It [the field] was just emerging, and there weren’t many professionals in the space and I got curious, I realised there were threats and vulnerabilities that organisations were not ready for. So, I took it upon myself to learn, grow, and prove that cybersecurity wasn’t just a cost—it was a necessity,” he says.
One of his greatest achievements is leading the MSSP-Winning Managed Security Services Programme in providing tailored cybersecurity solutions for companies.
“It’s not just about setting up firewalls or encrypting data. It’s about educating leadership and helping them see why security is everyone’s business,” he says.
While working with the MTN group, he was also recognised as the Lead Information Security Officer, a milestone he holds close. More recently, under his leadership, Access Bank Kenya achieved ISO certifications in information security and business continuity—accomplishments that underscore his commitment to excellence.
While cybersecurity is a big part of his life, Duncan’s identity extends beyond his role at Access Bank. He is a husband and father to two boys, aged three years and two months.
When not working, Duncan enjoys a variety of hobbies. He is an avid reader, often immersing himself in both fiction and non-fiction.
For Duncan, ambition is the key motivator. “I’ve always been driven by the fear of stagnation,” he says. “In 2019, I started dreaming of becoming a CISO. It felt far-fetched at the time, but here I am, and now I know there’s more. There’s always more,” he says.
In a rapidly evolving field, Duncan’s story is one of grit, vision, and a relentless drive to make an impact—not just in his profession, but in the lives of those he mentors.
“The future belongs to those who adapt,” he says.
