David Wairegi, 36

CFO

Muthokinju Paints & Cement

David Wairegi is redefining what it means to lead finance in Kenya’s construction sector by blending analytical rigour with youthful energy. He believes that finance is about shaping the future.

“Finance is both an art and a science. We don’t just crunch numbers; we tell stories that drive value across the organisation.”

Wairegi’s career began as an auditor at Pannell Kerr Forster (PKF) followed by Majid al Futtaim Kenya (Carrefour) where he worked as a financial controller in charge of commercial and e-commerce; Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, and Wasoko, a start-up where he implemented an ERP across several countries.

“Those experiences taught me to understand businesses holistically—how they make money, how they grow, and how to project their future,” he says. Raised in Tulaga, Kinangop, his journey is built of resilience. “I grew up in a place where the most affluent families were drivers or market traders. That environment instilled in me the hunger to create opportunities—not just for myself, but for others.”

"With effort and the right mindset, anything is achievable."

A Certified Public Accountant, he holds a BCom in Finance from KCA University, and is completing a Master of Commerce in International Business Management at Strathmore Business School. At Muthokinju, Wairegi faces the challenge of balancing tradition with growth.

To young Kenyans, he says: “With effort and the right mindset, anything is achievable.”
