David Limo, 40

Chief Actuary

Jubilee Holdings

David Limo is one of the most influential actuaries in East Africa.

Limo’s mark in the insurance sector is reflected in his leadership of working party that is shepherding the introduction of new accounting standard that took effect in 2023.

At the time, several top insurance firms struggled with the switch to the new rules on how insurers report their profits, known as IFRS 17—which aims to make it easier for investors and analysts to compare insurers.

It is also designed to smooth out performance by forcing insurers to record profits from long-term policies over the life of the contract, rather than up front.

"I believe leadership is a privilege and not an entitlement. True success lies in empowering others to grow"

During the transition to IFRS 17, Limo coordinated more than 40 professionals in the development of industry models and guided companies, finance teams, analysts and media.

His work helped position Kenya among leaders in IFRS 17 implementation in Africa, with several regulators on the continent visiting to learn from Kenya.

As he reflects on turning 40, he is increasingly focused on purpose, simplicity, and leadership grounded in humility.

“I have been shaped deeply by my parents and my Christian faith. I believe leadership is a privilege and not an entitlement. True success lies in empowering others to grow,” he says.

As the group chief actuary at Jubilee Holdings, he oversees actuarial operations across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Mauritius—guiding product development, pricing, risk management and long-term strategy for one of the region’s largest insurance groups.

What he considers most deserving of recognition is his role in building the next generation of actuarial leaders. Over the course of his career, he has mentored more than seven actuaries.

He is a creative storyteller and leatherwork hobbyist.
