Olympics marathon bronze medallist Benson Kipruto has steadily risen from the shadows to become one of the most accomplished marathoners of his generation.
Kipruto who bagged this years’ New York Marathon title, part of the Abbott Marathon Majors, is one of the accomplished marathon runners today.
Athletics runs in his blood because he is the younger brother of established marathoner Dickson Chumba, whose early success provided inspiration.
The 34-year-old Kipruto’s career in global road racing began in 2018, a year that saw him clock a personal best of 2:07:11 at the Seoul Marathon before triumphing at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
"The 2024 season saw him win at the Tokyo Marathon race before finishing third at the Olympic Games."
The 2024 season saw him win at the Tokyo Marathon race before finishing third at the Olympic Games.
The performance announced him as a new contender in a crowded field of elite athletes but it was the World Marathon Majors that would ultimately cement his legacy.
He represents the new wave of Kenyan marathoners rising as the older generation, including greats like Eliud Kipchoge, begins to slow down.
In 2021, Kipruto stunned a strong field to win the Boston Marathon and a year later, he added the Chicago Marathon to his growing talent running a blistering 2:04:24, which was one of the fastest times in the race’s history.
Focused, disciplined, and ambitious, Kipruto represents the future of marathon—athletes who are not only hungry for victory but also determined to carry forward Kenya’s proud distance running tradition with consistency and excellence.
Off-season, he connects with his home community and supports younger athletes.
